Priyanka Chopra’s Wedding Make-Up Artist Has Some Advice For Pandemic Brides - Vogue.co.uk

For South Asian weddings, with all the elaborate jewellery and attire, the task of applying one’s own make-up as a bride can appear daunting. During the pandemic, as more brides choose to do their faces themselves for intimate weddings, Bollywood celebrity make-up artist Mickey Contractor suggests going easy on the traditionally involved look, rather than aiming for the aspirational effects popularised by beauty bloggers on YouTube.

Priyanka Chopra’s Wedding Dress Designer Isn’t Worried For The Future Of Indian Bridal Couture

Contractor knows what he is talking about – after all, he is the man behind Priyanka Chopra’s natural, glowy look for her Hindu wedding to husband Nick Jonas. According to him, the most common mistake brides make when choosing their base products is opting for a foundation that is too light. “There is a certain thing about wanting to look fairer, and that is a definite ‘no’, because it eventually makes you look grey,” he says. As someone who was MAC India’s brand ambassador for over 10 years, he highly recommends MAC foundations that he himself helped to formulate for South Asian skin tones. Here, the trusted celebrity make-up artist shares six more tried and tested tips for brides intending to do their own make-up on the big day.

Avoid too many layers

If you don’t need foundation, but want to cover up those blemishes, try Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Instant Fix 24 hours concealer. However, do not unnecessarily layer, because eventually it starts to crack when you are smiling non-stop for pictures, cautions Mickey.

Chopra asked for a clean and subtle look with a bright red lip to match her Indian wedding lehenga. Mickey often opts for Huda Beauty’s liquid matte shades because of the variety of colours available, but due to its dry consistency he likes to finish the look with a light gloss, or a cream lipstick of a similar shade.

For Priyanka’s eyes he used a muted brown eye-shadow and smoked liner for a natural finish. If you don’t like false lashes, or cannot seem to make them work, don’t use them. Instead, apply several coats of a volumising mascara, such as Anastasia Beverly Hills Lash Brag Mascara, which leaves you with voluptuously defined lashes.

For the base, choose a hydrating moisturiser such as Clinique’s water-based formulations (Contractor swears by them), instead of a primer. “When you apply a lot of skin prep – from under eye creams to primers – it doesn’t make the make-up last long, it is only a myth,” he points out.

Identify the right products

While a lot of people are more comfortable blending products in with their finger tips, some brushes are a must-have for a wedding day. Contractor suggests investing in the basics –a foundation brush, a slant eyebrow brush with a spoolie, a lip brush, and a fluffy one for eye-shadow. If you’re willing to splurge on a full set, Delilah Cosmetics has an eight-piece vegan brush collection with a velvet storage pouch that’s a nice option.

Do not binge-watch videos by beauty bloggers if you have never done your own make-up, instead book an online consultation with a professional who can guide you through the basics. “It feels aspirational when you see Instagram videos in which someone is putting on layer after layer, four shades of eyeshadow – one for the crease, one for outer corner, another for the inner and then the false eyelashes. They are not lashes, those are fucking wings – you can fly with them,” jokes Contractor. “I don’t endorse that kind of make-up. Please don’t complicate your life.” He suggests going to a make-up store that offers bridal services, such as MAC, and speaking with the artists, who can recommend the right products for your skin and the best techniques to use to apply them.

Establish a skincare regime – and stick to it

It is prudent to establish a skincare regimen a few weeks ahead of the wedding and to stick to it. “Trying something new closer to the wedding date is not a good idea, because if you break out or get an allergic reaction, it puts you in panic mode,” the make-up artist says. Any facials or laser treatments should be scheduled at least two weeks before the big day. Kiehl’s has a range of serums for treating dark circles and fine lines effectively with vitamin C, that can help the skin look fresh.

Put together a touch-up bag

Have your bridesmaid carry a “touch-up” bag containing a lip gloss, compact for powdering the T-zone, tissues and cotton buds (and eyelash glue if you plan to cry!). Matte always photographs better, according to Mickey, hence using a loose powder over your concealer is always a good idea. Laura Mercier’s Invisible Setting Powder is an obvious choice in this category. The ultra-fine formula casts a flawless veil over the skin that curbs creasing and caking.

Easy on the highlighter

Even with all the heavy jewellery and bright colours that Priyanka wore, it didn’t feel “extra” because Contractor gave her a subtle statement look. He used only a hint of cream highlighter, because he does not believe glamour is about “excess highlighter”. “That is a wrong concept of glamour,” he says, “Highlighters are shiny products –it will catch light and reflect. Just because you can’t see it with a straight face when looking in the mirror does not mean it won’t shine.” YSL’s Shimmer Sticks blend in easily to give a luminous finish.

Wear a fabulous fragrance (and don’t forget your mask)

Lastly, all you need is a dab of a fabulous perfume and you’re ready to rock and roll. Dior’s Hypnotic Poison is a cult favourite for its vanilla and soft jasmine blend. Do not forget to carry a mask. Goddiva’s wine coloured mask is a great match for traditional red bridal outfits.
