From the internet’s obsession with Barbiecore, to fashion’s love affair with Valentino’s fuschia-dominated AW22 show, one thing is clear: pink is back. But it's not just back; it’s thriving. It’s everywhere you look – from the Insta-famous Ettore Sottsass mirror (Bella Hadid has one) and store facades (hello Glossier) to celebrities sporting head-to-toe pink on the red carpet. It's clear that pink’s renaissance era is in full swing, and make-up artists have been embracing the hue backstage too, with Pepto Bismol eyes in every style imaginable.
It's all great news to this long-time pink devotee. I did Barbiecore before it became a hashtag (I may have won a lookalike Barbie pageant at the age of 10…), I’ve subconsciously curated my wardrobe/stationery/tableware to be in varying flamingo shades and I’m all for candy floss eyeshadow. The one thing that still has me baffled? Pink lipstick.
As someone who feels most at home in a red lip, pink is a departure I’ve yet to commit to – and not for lack of trying. I’ve dabbled in rosy hues, but still they all appear jarring against my yellow undertones or leave me with an unhealthy pallor. That said, there's no denying the joyful allure of a good pink lip. “Pink lipstick is fun, hot and the ultimate coquettish lip colour,” agrees make-up artist Florrie White. “Choose a pink lip when you are going out to have fun for yourself and I promise everyone around you wants what you are having.”
Never one to shy away from a beauty challenge, I’m ready to give pink lipsticks another go, now armed with a useful tip from make-up artist Lisa Eldridge. “If you’re used to reds, you need a pink that's got red in it, so you'll feel more at home with it,” she tells me at her Covent Garden pop-up. As Eldridge layers her Skyscraper Rose on my lips, it imparts a similar brightening effect to red lipstick, but the vibe is punchier and fresher. On those overcast autumn days, a slick of vivid Schiaparelli pink might just be the beauty tonic we all need.
