Ky. Downs gets rained out again, make-up date is Tuesday - Horse Racing Nation

Franklin, Ky.

Because of bad weather, the last nine races of Sunday’s card at Kentucky Downs were postponed to Tuesday.

In the minutes following Sunday’s second race, the following message appeared on video screens: “Kentucky Downs: Racing Cancelled (sic) Races 3-11. Due to severe weather the remainder of tonight’s racing card has been cancelled.” Larry Collmus then announced that news over the track’s speakers.

At the time of the cancellation, the track was under a steady downpour. By 1:35 p.m. CDT, minutes after the third race was to have gone off, rain had stopped, and the sun was peeking out of gray clouds.

The National Weather Service forecast a 90 percent chance more rain for the rest of the day with as much as a half-inch total.

Ted Nicholson, Kentucky Downs’ vice president of racing, said jockeys reported “it was getting a little bit too loose out there.

“We were hoping that we could get the whole day in,” Nicholson said. “The course was in perfect shape after yesterday. But then with the continual rain since the first race, they felt it wasn’t safe. If they don’t feel it’s safe, then we don’t want them to go out there.”

Nicholson was asked whether, before deciding on cancellation, there had been a possibility of pausing the card and waiting until later in the afternoon to try to resume racing.

“There’s always that possibility,” Nicholson said. “It just didn’t take place.”

The races moved to Tuesday will not be redrawn, and scratched horse are considered back in where they were entered, according to a track spokesperson.

Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. won a starter allowance to open the card aboard Just Say When over a course rated good under weather described by the chart as showery. Ortiz declined comment when asked by Horse Racing Nation about the cancellation.

In the day’s second race, jockey Geovanni Franco scored on Blamethegoodtimes in a maiden special-weight event. Minutes after that race, dozens of track personnel wearing ponchos worked on the turf course before the cancellation was announced.

Three stakes races were scheduled to take place Sunday: the $500,000 Untapable Stakes, the $500,000 Music City Stakes and the Grade 3, $550,000 Ladies Marathon Stakes. Those will take place as part of a nine-race card Tuesday.

“Tomorrow’s going to be sunny and it’ll be perfect,” Nicholson said Sunday. “We’ll work on (the track) all day. Hopefully Tuesday we can get back out there and run those last nine races.”

Last Saturday's card was interrupted by a thunderstorm and eventually abandoned, and all of last Sunday's races were called off before they were started. An additional day of racing was added on Labor Day Monday to make up postponed races. Last weekend's Mint Million (G3) was made up Saturday.

The Kentucky Downs season is scheduled to end with a full card Wednesday. The weather forecast is for sunny days and highs in the mid 70s to low 80s through mid-week.
