I have always loved makeup; the ability to shapeshift into whatever vibe or persona you want to be that day always feels like putting on a coat of confidence with each swipe of mascara. But understanding how to contour my specific jawline or finding the best eyeshadow colors for my blue eyes is very different from being able to accurately give advice for all face shapes, skin tones, and people. So off to beauty school I went. Five years ago I got my makeup artist certification and it’s made me a better beauty editor. 

In building my kit for bridal makeup, one of the biggest tips I can give is that you can find great products at every budget. Some things are worth splurging on — lipstick in a fancy tube or that beautiful no-notes eyeshadow palette are two of mine — and others can be found in the budget-friendly aisles of the drugstore.

This is one of those products that stands the test of time even in a world with a constant rotation of new concealers to try. It’s my favorite for lighter makeup days or when I want to bring some brightness and even tone to a face. It doesn’t look cakey or heavy on the skin thanks to its thin texture, yet doesn’t blend to nothingness either. Dark circles or redness are erased with a few taps of your finger or brush to blend it out (our testing team named it the best concealer for dark circles). Plus, it doesn’t settle into fine lines on more mature skin. At just $7, this product is a steal and performs like its higher end counterparts.

If I had to name a top five Maybelline product, this lip gloss would be high on the list. It is simultaneously high shine but balm-like in its comfortable feel. The hyaluronic-acid infused formula gives a plumped appearance minus the tingling sensation. And if you previously avoided glosses because of the gooey, sticky mess, this one glides across your lips and lasts a surprisingly long time. The sheer, baby pink shade with a hint of shimmer is pretty on a range of skin tones, too.

If you’re having a less than flawless skin day (say, with large pores and texture on full display), this primer will set you right. It’s essentially the cream version of the photoshop blur tool for wrinkles, large pores, and texture. A small glob smoothed over your face and neck before foundation gives an airbrushed appearance and helps makeup last all day. I have this in my kit because it works on most skin types, goes on clear, and creates a smooth base for makeup. A good mascara can turn a bad morning around for me. (Dramatic but true.) It’s my one step routine for low effort makeup days to look more awake than I feel. I am a firm believer that drugstore mascaras are just as good, if not better, than the pricier wands. Maybelline Lash Sensational is that girl. The spiky brush grips every teeny tiny lash for full length and volume all along your lash line. Plus, it combs through as it pulls to the tips to remove clumps of excess product.
