EAST LANSING – Michigan State could finish its regular season with three games in five days in order to make up its postponed game against Minnesota.
That’s the scenario Tom Izzo laid out at his Monday press conference – one that he said Michigan State will do if necessary.
“If that’s when we’ve got to play, that’s when we’ll play,” Izzo said.
The Spartans’ scheduled Feb. 15 game against Minnesota was postponed in the aftermath of a shooting on Michigan State’s campus that killed three and injured five.
No makeup date has been announced in the six days since the postponement and the two teams don’t share any open scheduling windows dates between now and the end of the regular season on March 5.
But Izzo shared a potential arrangement that could help the Spartans and Gophers make up the game and play their full schedule.
Izzo said the best option he’s heard would involve Michigan State playing Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday to end the season. The Spartans have a game scheduled at Nebraska next Tuesday and a regular-season finale against Ohio State on Saturday, March 4. That makes Thursday, March 2 the potential make-up date against Minnesota.
Minnesota has a game scheduled against Rutgers that day but Izzo mentioned that the Scarlet Knights have been involved in rescheduling discussions. Both teams’ schedules would allow Rutgers-Minnesota to potentially move to Tuesday, Feb 28 to make room for Minnesota-Michigan State two days later.
Izzo mentioned that any potential scenario being discussed is “not etched in stone.”
“They are trying their hardest to work it out,” Izzo said. “The schools have been great.”
The game could have implications on Michigan State’s Big Ten tournament seeding; the Spartans start the week as one of six conference teams with seven losses.
And while Minnesota, ranked No. 241 in the NCAA’s NET rankings, represents only a potential Quadrant 4 win, the extra potential win could still help the Spartans on Selection Sunday.
