Inside The Trend For Minimal, “No-Make-Up” Bridal Beauty - British Vogue

Moments before Trinity Mouzon Wofford walked down the aisle last September, she borrowed a tube of Glossier lipstick from her maid of honour’s purse – her face otherwise bare, it was the only cosmetic she paired with her vintage lace dress. The co-founder of the wellness brand Golde doesn’t typically wear much make-up anyway (instead, she’s “pretty serious” about skincare) and wanted to keep things simple. After seeing the pictures online, others soon began reaching out to praise her minimalistic beauty instincts. “I was really floored by the response,” says Mouzon Wofford. “I heard from a lot of folks calling the move ‘refreshing’ in a sea of meticulously curated weddings.”

As modern ceremonies have evolved to favour unfussy city hall ceremonies and beachside gatherings, beauty experts are similarly focusing attention on more effortless looks – whether via glowy skin-focused products, regular maintenance, or stripped-back techniques like the TikTok-popular underpainting trick (a sheer update to cakey contouring). Suddenly, going make-up-free, or make-up-light, is en vogue.

“I think we went through a little phase where people were just going heavy on the foundation and concealer, but we’re coming out on the other side of that and people are getting to know their own skin,” says Erin Green, a make-up artist who’s worked on major editorials and for big beauty brands alike (including Glossier, the creator of that lipstick tube Mouzon Wofford grabbed). Green even went minimal for her own wedding day make-up at Hackney Town Hall in London. “It was important for me to not feel like it was too much of a departure from my everyday [look],” she says.

Eschewing heavily-layered cosmetics is already something brides considered when temperatures rise, something Green had observed herself, even though she rarely does make-up for weddings unless it’s a favour for a close friend. “One friend was getting married in Tulum and it was the middle of summer, so we opted to skip foundation entirely,” she explains. “In hotter climates, it’s best to strip back as much as possible, otherwise you’ll just be fighting the humidity — a good facial a few days before, with good prep the morning of, can give the illusion of a sheer foundation.” (Green suggests Sofie Pavitt’s Instagram as “a great example of an education source” for skin maintenance.)
