Scars of the past lead couple to a future in permanent makeup - SILive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Elsa Torresiani was attacked by a dog when she was 12 years old. As a result, she had to get 30 stitches in her face.

After getting over the terror of the incident, she was left with a permanent scar on her lip where the dog mauled her. For years, she was very self-conscious of the scar.

“It was horrible...Two reconstructive surgeries later I was left with a crooked lip line and stitch line scarring on my face. Permanent makeup fixed this, which is what inspired me to learn the craft,” said Elsa, who heads the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals (SPCP) Young Professionals Committee.

Today, her scar isn’t noticeable thanks to permanent makeup.

After meeting her wife, Angela Torersiani, a tattoo artist who also had a scar on her face that was fixed with permanent make-up, the pair decided to go into business together.

“I had a scar on my lip from a childhood accident. I would always wear lipstick to hide it. I had been working as a tattoo artist since 1997, but it never occurred to me that I should try to tattoo it. One day at a barbecue a woman approached me about my scar and offered to tattoo it for me. That was my first introduction to permanent cosmetics. I decided to take training with her and learn permanent makeup, and it’s all history from there,” said Angela, who also is a director of the SPCP.

A COMMON BOND

The Torresianis met at an industry conference, and immediately found a common bond in their love for permanent makeup.

“After we got married, it was a natural progression to want to work together. We wanted to bring together other services that help women love the skin they’re in and feel confident and beautiful,” she added.

The result is Flawless Permanent Cosmetics and Spa in Great Kills.

The business offers permanent cosmetic services, including brows, lips, eyeliner, scar camouflage, areola restoration and other scar-related services, said Angela.

Other services offered at the spa include facials, scalp micropigmentation, microneedling, plasma fibroblast, Gorgeous Glow Infusions, Dermaplaning, Lash Lift/Tint, teeth whitening, The Flawless Brow (henna), lash extensions, waxing, chemical peels and more.

BOOSTING SELF-ESTEEM

Since both Angela and Elsa know firsthand how permanent makeup can boost a person’s self-esteem, they said they enjoy helping others feel better about their appearance after a procedure.

“For people like Elsa and I, it’s easy to see how cosmetic tattooing helped us feel better about our scars. But there are so many reasons people seek out our services, such as men and women who have lost hair due to thyroid disease, cancer treatments, medications, and other illnesses. Even transgendered persons who are transitioning seek out cosmetic tattooing to help enhance male or female features,” said Angela.

Other reasons for seeking permanent makeup are disfiguring scarring from accidents, bad acne scarring and surgical scarring, she said.

“And of course, some people don’t have any of these issues, they just want to enhance their look in a way that is simpler and more carefree than cosmetic makeup,” said Angela.

DONATING SERVICES

Elsa donates her scar services to people who can’t afford procedures offered at the spa. She works with people who have scars from acne, accidents, surgery, stretch marks, violence and suicide attempts, explained Angela.

Flawless has also partnered with Sharshare, an organization that helps breast cancer survivors connect with areola tattoo providers for free or low cost.

HOW DOES THE PROCESS WORK?

The Torersianis start all permanent cosmetic procedures with a consultation “to better understand clients’ concerns and goals,” said Angela. After the procedure is performed, the client comes back in four to eight weeks for a “perfecting” appointment.

“This is basically a touch up, if needed, or to make any adjustments. We typically like to work conservatively, so the perfecting appointment allows us to go bigger, darker, bolder, etc... After that, clients come back between one and five years for a refresher to keep their procedures looking fresh,” she said.
