The best red lipstick is made by Violette_FR - Slate

This is One Thing, a column with tips on how to live.

I’m not much of a makeup-wearer. Unlike my almost-12-year-old, who is a “natural makeup” master thanks to TikTok, I’ve shied away from foundations, blush, anything brow-related (mine have not recovered from the ’90s), and all the other fun stuff out there to make you smooth and glowy. But there is one thing I can wear, and wear well: the red lip.

I was intimidated by lipstick for a long time and stuck mostly to neutral glosses and balms, even when it came to weddings and parties and special events. But a few years back, I had a co-worker at HuffPost who, despite shuttling two kids to preschool while pregnant with a third, would show up at work with impeccable hot-pink lips, no smudge to be seen, no dots on teeth. I inquired. The brand was called Too Faced. “You put this on and it does not move,” she told me. I bought the Melted Matte in “Bend and Snap,” whose name I also appreciated as the ultimate homage to Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Coolidge. It’s true: It doesn’t move. It is like a lip stain, and dry as a bone. I love that it doesn’t migrate once it’s on, but I can only endure the feeling and texture for a few hours before I am dying to take it off and smear my lips with Aquaphor. I think of my Melted Matte as a cocktail-party color, and keep something a little easier to wear if I’m going to be out for a while.

I found that in a NARS lipstick called Powermatte, in “Notorious.” This comes in a variety of shades, but I chose “Notorious” for its reference to my favorite Hitchcock movie. It’s a deep red-orange that goes on smooth smooth and silky, and feels moisturizing at the same time. This is an easy-to-wear day-to-night color.

But I have to be honest: As much as I love both of these options, I was still hunting for the true red, something like the shade Taylor Swift wore recently when she posed with her cat, Benjamin Button, on the cover of Time. (N.B.: My daughter made me promise to reference Taylor and her “red lip, classic” look in this article. Hi, honey!) I’ve tried a bunch, but my absolute favorite happens to nod to another great film, the four-plus-hour Jacques Rivette classic L’Amour Fou. Violette_FR is a small makeup brand that found me on Instagram. I was seduced by the short video that made their Petal Bouche Matte look easy to apply and to wear, and ordered it in “Amour Fou.”

Unlike so many of my Instagram purchases, this lipstick was a total win. It’s like a middle ground between Too Faced and NARS: It goes on like a stain, but is closer to the feel of a lipstick. I applied it just like the gamine French model in the Instagram reel, using the applicator to draw a lip line and then filling in from there. You do need to keep your mouth open, lips parted, to let it dry. And double-check to make sure you don’t have flecks on your teeth. But once you’ve done that: C’est si bon! Grab your beret and go!

As I’ve worn a red lip more frequently, I’ve realized what an impression it makes. It’s bold, yes, but it’s also classic and simple, and can make even a black sweatsuit look polished. (Or, in my case, a pair of black overalls over a white T-shirt.) Once you get used to it, you won’t go back, you will just want more and more shades. Speaking of that, I’m going to go order the new Violette shade, the hot-pink “Coeur Infidèle,” right now.
