Michigan climbed to No. 2 and USC moved into the top four in the latest AP Top 25 poll after an eventful Week 13 in college football. Here’s what you need to know:
Top-10 shakeup
Four top-10 teams lost amid an eventful Saturday. In addition to Ohio State, LSU lost to unranked Texas A&M, Clemson lost to unranked South Carolina and Oregon lost to No. 22 Oregon State. As a result, LSU fell five spots to No. 11, Clemson fell three spots to No. 10 and Oregon fell five spots to No. 15. Oregon State, meanwhile, was one of the week’s big poll winners, climbing six spots to No. 16. And on the heels of back-to-back top-10 wins against Tennessee and Clemson, South Carolina moved into the poll at No. 20.
The top-10 losses created room for two new entrants into the top 10, as Penn State (No. 8) and Washington (No. 9) moved up three spots each, ahead of Clemson among the five Power 5 teams that are 10-2.
What’s next?
Next week will mark the first time since 2011 that there is not a conference championship game with a matchup of two AP top-10 teams. The 10 conference championship games:
- ACC: No. 10 Clemson vs. No. 24 North Carolina
- Big 12: No. 3 TCU vs. No. 13 Kansas State
- Big Ten: No. 2 Michigan vs. Purdue
- Pac-12: No. 4 USC vs. No. 12 Utah
- SEC: No. 1 Georgia vs. No. 11 LSU
- AAC: No. 22 UCF at No. 18 Tulane
- C-USA: North Texas at UTSA
- MAC: Toledo vs. Ohio
- Mountain West: Fresno State at Boise State
- Sun Belt: Coastal Carolina at Troy
Purdue will be the 11th team to participate in a Power 5 conference championship game while unranked in the AP poll. Such teams are 5-5 with a pair of wins against top-five teams: Florida State beat No. 5 Virginia Tech in 2005 and Texas beat No. 3 Nebraska in 1993.
