Reds-Cardinals July 17, 2022, game postponed - MLB.com

ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals and Reds squads physically on fumes started their All-Star breaks early on Sunday when an afternoon of storms led to the postponement of their game.

A St. Louis team scheduled to play for a 17th day in a row and for the 30th time in 31 days got a much-needed day off heading into the All-Star break. Meanwhile, a Cincinnati team that has already had to use 53 players this season because of injuries and illnesses got a reprieve on Sunday from facing a squad that has beaten up on them six times in eight meetings this season. The Reds almost assuredly will break the 2003 franchise record for players used in a season at 57.

Sunday’s postponed game at Busch Stadium will now be played on Sept. 17 at 12:15 p.m. CT/1:15 p.m. ET as part of a split doubleheader, with Game 2 of the twin bill set for 6:15 p.m. CT/7:15 p.m. ET. Tickets for Sunday’s game will be valid for the 12:15 p.m. game on Sept. 17. Additional Cardinals ticket policy details can be found online at cardinals.com/tickets.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol liked that his team finished the unofficial first half of the season with two wins over the Reds. At 50-44, the Cardinals are just two games back in the loss column of the Brewers for the lead in the NL Central. It is just the 14th time in franchise history that the Cardinals have won 50 games prior to the All-Star break.

Marmol feels his team is in a good position to make a strong second-half run after weathering many injuries to several starters. St. Louis has had 13 rookies make their MLB debuts this season while filling in for injured regulars.

“I feel pretty good about it, because when you look at the amount of injuries that we had, you have to have some depth in order to stay afloat, and we’ve been able to do that,” said Marmol, whose squad has been without Yadier Molina, Jack Flaherty, Steven Matz, Tyler O’Neill and Harrison Bader for long stretches. “Have we absolutely run through our division? No, but at the same time, we’ve been able to see [Brendan] Donovan, [Nolan] Gorman and [Juan] Yepez.

“The names are common to us now, but the reality is [all the rookies] have stepped up and allowed us to be competitive. Now, going into the second half, we’ve got our guys rested and healthy and we can make a run at it.”

Matz was scheduled to pitch on Sunday for the first time at the MLB level since May 22, when he left a start with shoulder discomfort and subsequently went on the injured list. Matz, who was signed to a four-year, $44 million deal last fall, pitched in four Minor League rehab starts to ready himself for his return. Due to the rainout, he instead threw a bullpen session on Sunday and his next start will come next week, likely against the Blue Jays -- the team he won 14 games for last season.

In a strange scheduling twist, the Cardinals and Reds will match up again in the first three games after the All-Star break from July 22-24, this time in Cincinnati. The Reds are just 2-6 against the Cardinals this season, losing two of three played in Cincinnati from April 22-24.
