Summer 2023 will forever go down in pop-culture history as the time when Barbie mania took over feminist discourse, fashion and, yes, beauty. Greta Gerwig's cleverly written visual masterpiece have been a talking point in hair and make-up for months and the obsession shows no signs of slowing down. After all, who doesn't want a piece of Barbie's perfectly polished glamour?
While the costumes in the live-action film are fanciful and over-the-top (in the best possible way), the Barbies' make-up looks were surprisingly fresh, sophisticated and wearable for everyday life. Plush, healthy-looking skin, bright eyes and pops of colour on the lips makes for a recipe that's easy to follow and guarantees an elegant finish no matter the occasion.
Award-winning lead make-up artist Ivana Primorac – whose impressive CV lists The Other Boleyn Girl, Little Women, Sweeney Todd and The Crown – turned to fellow make-up artist Lisa Eldridge when packing her kit for Barbie.
Eldridge noted in her recent newsletter: "In early 2022, multi award-winning hair and make-up designer Ivana Primorac contacted my studio to let me know that she had chosen my products for the upcoming Barbie movie as they had performed and looked the best on camera during the make-up screen tests." According to Eldridge, her lip colours were also "deemed by Ivana to be absolutely spot on for the creation of the characters".
In an Instagram video, respected beauty journalist Laura Capon, who had one-on-one face time with Eldridge and her assistant prior to the film's release, revealed the exact colours used on the Barbies. "They laid out all of Lisa's lipsticks and lip glosses for Margot [Robbie] to pick from every day, which I love," says Capon in the video.

She lists all of the shades that were sent to the film set including True Velvet Lip Colour in Velvet Ribbon (seen in the film's opening sequence featuring 1959 Barbie), Velvet Blush Lightly, Velvet Petal and Velvet Beauty; the Luxuriously Lucent Lip Colour in Love of My Life and Rose Official; the Insanely Saturated Lip Colour in Skyscraper Rose; and a selection of Gloss Embrace Lip Glosses in Carnival, Delilah, Pompadour and Charm. Velvet Petal and Velvet Ribbon both have 'As Seen In Barbie' badges on the brand's website, so it's safe to say that these two definitely made appearances in the film.

The Barbies' lit-from-within complexions were achieved with a combination of professional treatment protocols provided by skin health expert Jasmina Vico, combined with make-up from likes of Lisa Eldridge, Charlotte Tilbury, Chanel and MAC.
Eldridge built her career designing camera-ready looks for red carpets, editorials, and music videos (Dua Lipa, who plays Mermaid Barbie in the film, is a longstanding client of hers), so it comes as no surprise that her refined formulas and thoughtfully crafted colours are trusted by fellow professionals to tell their own stories.
