HS football: This sweet 16 make up last week’s ‘Top Performers,’ ranked in order - SILive.com

The Advance/SILIve.com weekly High School Football ‘Top Performers’ list has increased for the second consecutive week and has a bit more variety as well.

In fact, a pair of punters have joined the list for the first time during the 2021 season, and rightfully so. It should be noted, however, that their punting duties aren’t the only reason they’re being acknowledged.

This time around, the list has reached 16 and, believe it or not, only nine of Staten Island’s 11 teams took the gridiron in Week 3.

Scroll down to see this week’s ‘Top Performers,’ in order.

16. Aiden Schnell (Tottenville) ... The senior running back/outside linebacker rushed the ball 17 times for 158 yards and played a strong, all-around game defensively during the Pirates’ 28-22 come-from-behind win over Midwood.

15. Chris Prince (St. Peter’s) ... The senior running back had nine carries for 116 yards and a pair of scores during a 45-14 loss to Chaminade.

14. Maurice Hinton (Curtis) ... The senior running back rushed the ball just five times, but finished with 72 rushing yards and a TD.

13. Joseph Badyna (Monsignor Farrell) ... The senior defensive end caused havoc up front for the Lions as he registered two tackles for losses, two more for no gain and a half-sack.

12. Andrew Deangelis (St. Joseph by-the-Sea) ... The junior wide receiver/strong safety deflected two passes, hauled in a pair of throws for 23 yards and averaged 33.2 yards per punt in five attempts during the Vikings’ 22-6 loss to Farrell on Saturday.

11. Karym Cruz (McKee/Staten Island Tech) ... With the score tied and just minutes left in the Seagulls’ game against Truman, the senior signal-caller rushed twice for 15 yards before unleashing an 80-yard TD pass to Jahquan Abrahams with just 44 seconds left in their PSAL Bowl division game. Cruz added a rushing two-point convesion to give MSIT the 8-0 victory.

10. Tayshaun Lewis (Port Richmond) ... The senior wide receiver hauled in a 21-yard TD pass and returned a punt 85 yards to paydirt to lift the Raiders to a 38-0 triumph over Brooklyn Tech.

9. John Caufield (Monsignor Farrell) ... The junior defensive back played a solid game defensively, including a key tackle for a 7-yard loss late in the game, but he did the majority of his damage as a punter for the Lions. Caufield averaged a whopping 45.3 yards in three punts, including a game-changing 62-yard kick midway through the third quarter.

8. Anthony Luna (New Dorp) ... The senior running back carried the ball 11 times for 82 yards, including a game-high 20-yard scamper, and three touchdowns during the Central Cougars’ 27-14 triumph over Bayside.

7. Aaron Espinet (Monsignor Farrell) ... The senior did his usual solid job as a linebacker, but also rushed the ball 12 times for 126 yards and a pair of scores during Farrell’s victory over Sea.

6. Johnny Mims (Curtis) ... The junior defensive lineman finished with a pair of sacks — including a safety — and played a big role on a defense that allowed no total yards (minus-9 rushing) in the first half against JFK.

5. Paul Ventura (Monsignor Farrell) ... The defensive end-converted-linebacker finished with a pair of sacks and a tackle for no gain as he led a defense that limited to the Vikings to 100 total yards, including 24 on the ground.

4. Sam Martin (Curtis) ... The senior running back/wide receiver-safety had four carries for 78 yards and a touchdown, as well as a 38-yard TD reception. He also played his usual stingy game defensive for the undefeated Warriors.

3. Louis Spezio (Tottenville) ... The wide receiver turned in a monster performance against the Hornets, hauling in a game-high nine passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns. The senior had touchdown catches of 97, 10 and 25 yards and also made a key 17-yard reception on fourth down that kept the Pirates’ last-minute, winning drive alive.

2. A.J. Gonzalez (New Dorp) ... The senior quarterback turned in another superb performance for the Central Cougars, rushing the ball 19 times for 205 yards and a touchdown during ND’s victory over Bayside. The signal-caller also connected on 4 of 5 passes for 48 yards.

1. Michael Marten (Tottenville) ... The versatile quarterback not only connected on 12 of 18 passes attempts for 200 yards, but also threw three touchdown passes.

But most importantly, with the game on the line, the three-year varsity signal-caller rushed for the game-winning 3-yard TD run with just 30 seconds remaining as the Pirates recorded a 28-22 PSAL City Conference win over visiting Midwood.

“He’s been everything we expected and more,’' praised Tottenville head coach Brian Neville, whose team improved to 2-1 in league play with a game against host Lincoln on Friday night. “Mike comes to practice every day with a great attitude. He always looks to get better and supports his teammates.

“He just has the ability to throw the ball well and make plays with his legs and that’s exactly what he did against Midwood on Friday night.

“We couldn’t be happier with the way he’s been playing,’' concluded Neville. “It’s really worked out.’'
