Mimi Thorisson: 'I'll never go out without make-up' - The Telegraph

If you need a definition for ‘la dolce vita’, Mimi Thorisson’s life is hard to beat. The cookbook author lives in Turin, Italy, an hour west of Milan, with her family, and their idyllic existence is documented by her husband, Icelandic photographer and art director Oddor Thorisson on Instagram.

She has a wardrobe to match, too.

‘I’ve loved fashion since I was a little girl,’ she says. ‘My mother is French and my father is Chinese, so I grew up in Hong Kong, but we would spend summers in France, and always stop by Paris. She loved Yves Saint Laurent, Charles Jourdan – there was this image of a woman who was confident, sexy, legs, shoulderpads… I’d dress up in her clothes and want to be that woman.’

As an adult, she’s followed suit. ‘I can’t even count how many dresses I have,’ she admits. ‘I have dresses in Hong Kong; I have dresses in France. I’m constantly searching for vintage YSL Rive Gauche and 90s Prada, and I love Loretta Caponi. [Although] I have five daughters. So I always have an excuse for collecting them.’

Yes, that’s right: five daughters. Three sons, too. The five younger children are at home in Turin; the elder ones live in Paris.

They were all born in France when the family was living in the Bordeaux region. It was their regular road trips to Italy, while Thorisson was writing cookbook Old World Italian, that inspired them to relocate five years ago.

It’s a move that’s had an impact on Thorisson’s style, too. ‘Tailoring here is very important,’ she acknowledges. ‘Even for children, when I go shopping for them in Torino, a lady tailors their skirts.’

She has become fond of labels like Venice-based Barena, and Carla Saibene. ‘She’s the best-kept secret for Milanese ladies,’ Thorisson says of Saibene. ‘Mainly pantsuits – they’re quite affordable and good quality as well.’

This approach to style suits her perfectly. She’s never been a tracksuit person: ‘I just feel very uncomfortable wearing those kinds of clothes, because I like to be dressed up. Even for the school run, I always have a necklace. I’ll never go out without make-up.’

Jewellery is largely vintage, by Trifari or Monet. And footwear?

‘I love flat shoes, but I have to admit, everyone looks better with a bit of height. But now I don’t go for more than six centimetres, and Italy is impossible [without] block heels.’

This penchant for old-fashioned elegance and polish makes her relatively recent discovery of jeans a bit of a curveball. It happened on a Zara Home photo shoot a couple of years ago.

‘They chose the clothes that I would wear and I was devastated when I saw a pair of “mom” jeans. I [thought] I’m going to look like a bag of potatoes. But then they paired them with a shirt and ballerinas and I fell in love with them.’

She celebrated her recent 50th birthday with a similar enthusiasm. ‘I am embracing it,’ she says. ‘I think it’s so cool to be 50 and feel great about your age.’ What’s the French for ‘amen to that’?

Personal style rules

1. Always go for something elegant and timeless for a night out: a little black dress or a tailored pantsuit. Avoid fast fashion because it’s never going to age well.

2. Don’t over-accessorise. If I’m wearing big earrings, I wouldn’t wear a big bracelet; if I’m wearing lots on my wrists, I’ll go easy on the ears.

3. It’s worth investing in pre-owned luxury, as it’s more affordable but good quality. When I look in my closet and I see things I’ve had since I was 18 that I can pass on, the investment feels worth it.

4. I always have a black bodysuit from Falke or Wolford, they’re so flattering and go with everything. I love it with a long, full skirt, and a pair of ballerina flats.

5. I love a nice silk scarf, especially a masculine style, so I often steal them from my husband. It looks so elegant tied around your neck to the side. Add sunglasses, and you look like a movie star.
