How Wisconsin football quarterback Nick Evers is trying to make up for his 'slow start' - Madison.com

Nick Evers knew what he was getting into.

The redshirt freshman quarterback for the University of Wisconsin football team was the first transfer quarterback to announce his commitment to the Badgers following the hiring of coach Luke Fickell from Cincinnati and North Carolina offensive coordinator Phil Longo. But Longo didn’t mislead Evers.

“He’s a very upfront, honest dude,” Evers said Wednesday about Longo.

Longo told Evers, an Oklahoma transfer, that he would recruit other quarterbacks. And other quarterbacks came quickly. SMU transfer Tanner Mordecai, who shared a quarterback trainer with Evers when Evers was in high school, was the second transfer to join the program. Mississippi State transfer Braedyn Locke was added, too.

The Badgers are operating during spring practices with a six-person quarterback room, five of whom have freshman-level eligibility remaining. Longo said Wednesday that Mordecai is “our top guy,” with Locke serving as the backup — “And this could change,” Longo said — with redshirt freshman Marshall Howe serving as the third option on the depth chart “for today.”

That leaves Evers, the former four-star recruit, in a group that hasn’t gotten many consistent reps throughout the spring — only about three per practice, based on Longo’s estimation.

“I came here to compete,” said Evers, who totaled 3,335 yards passing and more than 1,000 yards rushing in his senior year at Flower Mound (Texas) High School. “I came here to be the best I could possibly be as a quarterback, as a leader. And the guys that he brought in, and the guys that were here even before (the transfers), we just push each other every single day to be better.”

Evers admits he got off to a “slow start.” He didn’t catch on as fast as he would have liked learning Longo’s offense and the terminology that comes with it. He said he dealt with some issues moving from a school about 170 miles from his hometown to one more than 1,000 miles away. But he doesn’t want to use that as an excuse.

Evers said Longo emphasizes “earning reps on the field based on how you perform in the classroom.” Making the most of limited reps is a reality in a crowded Badgers quarterback room. And Evers is trying to use film study to gain an edge. He said he spends “countless hours” with Longo in the film room and feels like he’s made strides. Evers got his most reps with the third-team offense so far this spring during UW's practice Tuesday.

He and Longo met one-on-one after that practice and Longo again stressed that Evers’ learning of the system will dictate when and how snaps he gets under center. Longo doesn’t deny anything about Evers’ ability, saying Evers might be “the best athlete of the group.”

Evers said that it’s “mind-blowing” how much Longo knows about the game, the same thing that seemingly overwhelmed him at the start. He admitted he probably should have been better prepared. Now he’s learning.

“It's just a really healthy environment to be in,” Evers said about UW. “With all these exciting times going on, our team’s really amped up about everything.”
