Gators Make Up Half of the Final Four in NCAA Singles Championships - Florida Gators

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – In an exciting day four of competition at the NCAA Individual Championships, both Ben Shelton and Sam Riffice won their singles matches to advance to the semifinals on Thursday afternoon at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex.

This marks the first time in four years that two players from the same school are in the Final Four of the singles championships as Wake Forest's Petros Chrysochos and Borna Gojo competed against one another for the title in 2018.

No. 1-seed and No. 2-ranked Shelton (35-5) put together his fourth-consecutive, straight-set victory, this time against No. 15-ranked and 9-16-seed Arthur Fery (24-8) of Stanford. In the first set, the Gator went up a break for a 3-1 lead, then won three of the next five games to secure the 6-3 first set.

The second set started off with each player holding serve until Shelton broke Fery's to take a 5-4 advantage. In the following game, the Gainesville native held serve to claim the 6-3, 6-4 victory over the Stanford player. This marks Shelton's 35th singles win of the season, 25th ranked victory on the year and eighth win in a row. He ties for ninth in program history in single-season combined wins with 58 on the year.

Senior captain and No. 28-ranked Riffice (25-6) made it to his second-straight semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championships with a win against No. 39 Inaki Montes de le Torre of Virginia. Just a week ago, Montes (22-5) defeated Riffice in the quarterfinals of team play, before going on to win the team championship with the Cavaliers.

Picking up solid wins against Riffice, No. 10 Johannus Monday (Tennessee), No. 21 Gabriel Diallo (Kentucky) and No. 1 Daniel Rodrigues (South Carolina), Montes was on a hot streak and Riffice needed to play some of his best tennis to beat the Virginia player – and that's exactly what he did.

The Orlando native dominated in the first set, going up a break, 3-1, before winning three of the next five games for a 6-3 first-set victory.

The second set was a grind from start to finish as Montes took an early 4-2 lead. The Gator showed poise and resiliency as he battled back to tie the match at 4-4. Both players held serve until a 6-6 tie commenced. In the breaker, Riffice went down 3-5 to Montes, before rallying back and winning four points in a row for a 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory.

With this win, the senior now totals 99 career singles wins and is 25-6 on the season. Boasting a four-match win streak, Riffice will face No. 6 August Holmgren of San Diego in the Final Four. Holmgren is coming off a three-set win against No. 61 Eduardo Nava (Wake Forest) in the quarterfinals, was a singles finalist in the ITA All-American Championships last fall, and won the singles title at the ITA Fall National Championships.

After a tough day of singles competition, both Riffice and Shelton (20-9) moved on to doubles play, where they faced the No. 4 duo of Cleeve Harper and Richard Ciamarra (22-10) of Texas in the quarterfinals.
The Gators were able to keep up with the Longhorns in the first set, breaking three of their serves. After tying the match at 5-all, Harper and Ciamarra would win the next two games for a 7-5 advantage. In the following set, the Longhorns kept up their momentum as they won four-consecutive games after a 2-2 tie to win the match 7-5, 6-2.

Riffice and Shelton are the first Gators to advance to the doubles quarterfinals since Duarte Vale and McClain Kessler in 2018. The duo collected 20 wins on the season with 12 of those coming against ranked teams.
