Beaumont high schoolers to receive reward to make up for fair day rain out - Beaumont Enterprise

Some Beaumont ISD high school students are getting a reward.

After the March rain out of the first of two BISD Fair Days, plans were rearranged to allow eligible elementary and middle school students attend the fair on the day originally designated for high school students.

While eligible high school students still received their allotted three free ride tickets, they were unable to attend the fair during the school day as originally planned.

However, the district has found a solution to make it up to those 2,485 students.

BISD high school students who were eligible for the fair day will be given one extra final exam exemption this semester.

"I know there was a lot of disappointment when the high school students weren't able to go, but we made the right decision to reward our elementary and middle school students," said district Superintendent Shannon Allen at April's regular board meeting.

Since the two fair days took place during the last week of the fair, and the only day left in that week to hold an additional fair day was Friday, the district could not reschedule the high school fair day, Allen said.

The fair stayed open until midnight on Friday, meaning that workers would violate Occupational Safety and Health Administration had they worked extra hours to accommodate the high school students.

Traditionally, seniors can earn up to three exam exemptions and freshmen, sophomores and juniors can earn up to two, Senior Director of Student Support Services Randall Maxwell said in an email.

"The Fair Day Committee brainstormed several ideas that students would feel was a reward in lieu of the full fair day experience," he said. "This was the most favorable option, along with giving the students three free ride tickets to use on the last Saturday of the fair."

Students who received a passing score in all courses in the third nine-grading period, have less than four days of in-school suspension, and do not have any out-of-school suspensions or days assigned to alternative centers for discipline purposes are eligible for the bonus exemption.

"Giving this extra exam exemption affords many students the opportunity for an added incentive," Maxwell said. "We hope that it gives them a reprieve at the end of a school year that has been filled with hard work."

Maxwell said students may use their own discretion as to whether to use the exemption and which course to apply it to.

At the board meeting, Allen said the district hopes to continue the partnership with YMBL next year, where they will try again to give high school students an opportunity to have a fair day.
