Members of the Fort Smith Board of Education approved changes to the current school year calendar, allowing for professional development days to be used for in-class instruction days to make up for missed days due to the weather.The Fort Smith Public School District currently has four days to make up. The 2023 - 2024 school calendar does not include snow days, but they are included in the 2024 - 2025 calendar for the next school year.Initial plans call for students to be in class on March 15 and April 22, on what were previously scheduled professional development days for teachers. The development days are now scheduled for June 3 and June 4.On Monday, board members approved changing the remainder of the current school year from being based on the number of instructional days to hours and minutes.In Arkansas, public schools are required to have 178 days of in-person classroom instruction or 1,068 hours."We're kind of stuck. We have been building the plane while we fly it," said Lorrie Woodward, who teaches kindergarten and represents her school on the district's Professional Personnel Committee, which makes recommendations to the the district and board members. "It's pros and cons on both sides. Because the professional development is things that are supposed to help us with our teaching as we're doing it. It's a positive because at that point we finished testing. So I think for the kids, it might be the better choice. It does mean that, of course, no days off at all, except for spring break."Feb. 19 is another professional development day that could be used for students to attend school if needed.The school district is currently waiting for additional guidance and final approval from the Arkansas Department of Education.Fort Smith Board of Education members also approved an alternative calendar for the 2024 - 2025 school year.The new calendar includes three snow days, as well as six new staff collaboration days.School administrators said the new calendar provides more flexibility, but middle school and high school students will be in class for an additional 15 minutes, extending the school day from 3:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
