We have been building the plane while we fly it," said Lorrie Woodward, who teaches kindergarten and represents her school on the district's Professional Personnel Committee, which makes recommendations to the the district and board members. "It's pros and cons on both sides. Because the professional development is things that are supposed to help us with our teaching as we're doing it. It's a positive because at that point we finished testing. So I think for the kids, it might be the better choice. It does mean that, of course, no days off at all, except for spring break."Feb. 19 is another professional development day that could be used for students to attend school if needed.The school district is currently waiting for additional guidance and final approval from the Arkansas Department of Education.Fort Smith Board of Education members also approved an alternative calendar for the 2024 - 2025 school year.The new calendar includes three snow days, as well as six new staff collaboration days.School administrators said the new calendar provides more flexibility, but middle school and high school students will be in class for an additional 15 minutes, extending the school day from 3:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
