Baby baking is the easy way to keep your make-up perfect all day - Women's Health UK

With current make-up trends, it can sometimes feel like you can't move for the dew of it all. From glazed doughnut skin to lip gloss nails, dew has had something of a monopoly on popular beauty aesthetics. For those of us trying to pare down our dew, even if only slightly, baking can seem like the easiest way. A storied make-up technique, baking, the act of setting make-up with large quantities of powder, has been used for decades by Drag artists and celebrity make-up artists looking to keep make-up shine-free and fresh for hours.

If you're not familiar, 'baking' refers to the act of placing a fair amount of powder onto the face (usually in the areas you want to brighten or reduce shine, like the under eyes, forehead and jawline), waiting for a period of time (five to ten minutes) and then swiping away any excess powder that hasn't settled into the skin. Lauded for the way it keeps make-up in place and perfected for long periods of time, baking hit the mainstream make-up world in 2015 and hasn't let up since.

One of the main issues people encounter with the baking method is that, while their skin looks smoother and more even in photographs, in real life that amount of powder can make skin look cake-like or thick with make-up. Wearers also report that baking can cause the powder to sit in fine lines or congeal on drier areas of skin, making both appear more noticeable. Slightly counter-intuitive.

Baby baking, though, concentrates on pressing powder in small quantities in smaller areas. The upside? Brighter, more awake-looking skin with minimal shine. It's quicker, too.

Andreea Ali, a make-up artist based in Paris, demonstrates the method as part of her 'modern make-up routine', showing how easy it is to set make-up without going overboard.

'Baking, I think is part of the past. Now, it's all about "baby baking". Let me show you what baby baking is,' she says, holding a small, triangular-shaped powder puff and a pot of Givenchy Prisme Libre Setting & Finishing Loose Powder in shade N03 Voile Rosé.

'I press it here, sort of where this crevice is,' Ali begins, softly pressing the powder into the inner crevice of her eye socket and nose. 'Applying your powder like this will... brighten your under eyes and... make the nose look more narrow.'

Ali also gently pushes powder into the areas around her nose, mouth and forehead, focusing on mattifying each area without using an excess of product. Unlike baking, Ali's method of baby baking sets the make-up underneath and reduces shine, all while focussing on smaller areas instead of large swathes of the face. Plus, you don't need to wait to remove excess product as with traditional baking.

Baby baking doesn't require overhauling your make-up tools, though. A smaller make-up brush can do the same job or folding your existing circular powder puff in two to create a smaller surface area. The trick is to control the amount of product you use. In this case, more is not better. Remember, you can always build. It's much harder to take away and, in the case of powder, nigh on impossible.

More about intention with quantity and placement, baby baking speeds up getting ready time, largely due to the fact you don't need to wait for the powder to 'bake' before swiping off. In this instance, as with a lot of things, less is more. Maximalists look away now.
