I’m a make-up artist – seven tricks that’ll make you look 10 years younger & why ditching a dark eyeshadow... - The Sun

MOST tend to use make-up to enhance their natural features - but sometimes despite the best of our efforts, we end up adding years to our face.

Luckily, offering a helping hand to guide you through all the Dos and Don'ts, one professional beauty guru has revealed the biggest mistakes to avoid.

Dina Grinevica, from Southampton, is a make-up artist who offers services at the comfort of your own home, ranging from the more subtle and natural looks to full-glam for a chic evening party.

Having been in the industry for years and having passed an accredited course, Dina certainly knows a thing or two about all things beauty - and now she has shared her top secrets.

ALL ABOUT THE PREP

Before you even set off to create a work of art on your face it is important to ensure you start with a clean and ready-to-go canvas,

''A good skincare routine is a must for your make-up to look flawless, so make sure to cleanse, tone, moisturise and use an SPF to make your skin look youthful.

''It's important to also allow your face to absorb the products, so wait 10 minutes before you start your makeup routine,'' Dina added.

If you're planning to be out and about all day, also opt for a hydrating primer.

GO LIGHT

It might feel tempting to go heavy with the foundation - but according to the whizz, it's a big mistake that will only add years to your face.

First, it is key to find the correct undertone of your skin - these range from warm to neutral to cool - and then choose the right shade.

''For mature skin, I find it best to go for light to medium coverage foundations.

''Start with little, and you can always build it up with more product for glam occasion makeup looks.''

CREAM PRODUCTS - YOUR BEST FRIEND

If used correctly, make-up can really enhance your natural features you've been blessed with.

To brighten and lift your face, Dina recommended using a liquid concealer ''strategically''.

Begin by applying ''some in the corner of your nose and in the outer eye, and then buff it out in a tapping motion''.

''I also love using cream blush, but applying it more towards your temples, rather than in the centre of your cheek - for that lifting effect!''

NO MORE BAKING

Beauty lovers will remember the baking craze a few years ago, inspired by celebrities like Kim Kardashian.

But despite what others claim, Dina suggested avoiding overpowdering your face, as the product ''loves creasing into fine lines and wrinkles''.

''If you still want to go for powder, use pressed powder to lightly set the concealer under your eyes, and if you have other areas that retain oils on your skin.''

EASY ON BROWS

Leaving the house with eyebrows that haven't been filled in seems like an impossible task - and rightly so, as they frame our face.

But here, Dina emphasised, go for lighter shades, ''as darker ones can easily make you appear more mature''.

''Ideally, go for something that fits your hair colour (slightly darker, if you're blonde), and choose eyebrow powder over pencils or pomades for a more natural look.''

SOFT AND NEUTRAL FOR EYES

With summer just begun and countless festivals to look forward to, you might feel like adding a pop of colour to your eyes.

If that's your thing - feel free to do so (after applying a primer on your eyelids, of course).

However, the whizz explained, that choosing dark and bright colours will create a more mature look.

''Apply a soft brown matte colour into your crease to create a shape for your eyes, and go for light colours on your lids to open up your eyes even more.''

If you love shimmers - only apply a small amount to the to the centre and inner corner of your eyes.

This, she added, is because these too love to crease into fine lines when used heavily.

''I also love using dark brown eyeshadow as an alternative to black eyeliner for a natural look and easier application.''

HIGHLIGHTER - A MUST

Almost nothing screams youthfulness quite like a dewy complexion - and for this, highlighter, whether cream or powder, is your best friend.

''My best tip for appearing younger with makeup is all about the glow!

''Use highlighter in areas that attract the most light - top of your cheeks, between your eyes, under your eyebrow bone, the tip of your nose and on your cupid's bow.''
