Baseball Hits the Road for Make-up Home Game vs. Frostburg State - Wheeling University Athletics

Wheeling, W. Va. - The weather has been reeking havoc this spring sports season causing several games to be moved around this season. The Wheeling University Baseball team (12-22, 8-10) has been no stranger to these movements and will hit the road for a rescheduled home game on Wednesday. They travel to Frostburg State tomorrow where they will play host to the Bobcats in Mountain East Conference (MEC) North Division play with first pitch at 1 PM. It will be the continuation of the four-game series between the two teams that started back on April 15th at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Complex.

For the Cardinals, it is the second game that has been moved this week, with their non-conference game against Seton Hill originally scheduled for Tuesday being pushed to Wednesday, April 27th. Because of that, the April 15th game vs. Frostburg State was the last time the Cardinals took the field, dropping a pair of contests to the Bobcats. Game one of that series saw the teams battle it out across seven innings, with the lead changing hands a few times throughout the game, but in the end, it was Frostburg State who held on to win 9-8. In the second game of the day. Frostburg State jumped out to an early lead and stayed there holding on to win 13-2.

For the Cardinals, a familiar face led the way in game one, with sophomore J.R. Heavilin continuing his dominant sophomore campaign. The designated hitter finished the day 2-3 with a double and two RBI as he came through with some of the biggest hits of the day. He tied the game early with a first inning single and then helped the Cardinals add on with an RBI double in the fifth that brought the Cardinals total to six runs. Heavilin has reached base safely in eight of his last nine games and leads the Cardinals with a .407 batting average this season. He is fourth in the MEC in hits (47) this season while sitting tied for sixth in batting average (.407) and tied for ninth in RBI (30).

In game two, it was junior Garth Charlton that came through for the Cardinals with the lone RBI in the team's 13-2 loss, the other run scored via wild pitch. Charlton finished game two 2-3 with a double and an RBI and drove in one of his team's two runs as part of that two-run fourth inning. Charlton has mostly been handling the catching duties in the second half of doubleheaders this season and has made the most of his opportunities. In 21 games played this season, Charlton is hitting .300 with four home runs and 14 RBI as he has been part of a catching core that has brought the offense. As a group, Wheeling catchers are hitting .343 this season with 16 home runs and 72 RBI over the team's first 34 games of the season.

With the MEC regular season coming down to its final three weeks, things are still wide open in the 2022 MEC playoff race. Wheeling currently sits in fifth in the MEC North Division, just outside of the top three to make the tournament. They sit just a half game behind West Liberty for fourth in the division and four games back of Notre Dame College for that coveted third spot in the MEC North. With four games remaining each against both teams there is still plenty of time for the Cardinals to make-up valuable space in the division.

The Matchup

Wednesday afternoon will mark the seventh and eighth all-time matchup between the Cardinals and Bobcats, and the third and fourth time that they have met this season. Wheeling holds the advantage in the all-time series, going 4-2 against Frostburg State, but the Bobcats got their revenge winning the first two games of the season series this past weekend. With the series now shifting to Frostburg, Maryland, Wheeling is looking to build off their 4-0 record in Frostburg.

In the opening two games of the series, Wheeling's offense combined for 11 runs in the two games but fell 9-8 and 13-2. J.R. Heavilin led the way, going 2-3 with a double and an RBI in game one while Garth Charlton duplicated that effort in game two. Wheeling now looks to even the season series as they head out on the road.
