Versace’s AW22 make-up proves Julia Fox is still #1 muse - Dazed

Julia Fox and Kanye West may no longer be together, but that doesn’t mean she has stopped being a muse and #1 hustler. Having sparked Josh Safdie’s inspiration for his critically acclaimed movie Uncut Jahms, and played Barbie for West, this time it was the fashion world that Fox set her muse-y sights on.

Over the weekend, Versace showed its AW22 show at Milan Fashion Week. Presenting a collection all about subversive sensuality, the Versace line-up was dominated by sleek and sexy looks and textures including satin and liquid latex. When it came to the make-up, Pat McGrath created a trio of bold looks that she says represent the “strength” of this new “powerful Versace woman”.

Alongside bleached brows and a deep plum lip came some smudged smokey eyes that will be very familiar to anyone who has been keeping up with Fox and her dramatic Black Swan-esque looks. Proving that the intense smokey eye trend is still doing strong, models including Bella and Gigi Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski walked the runway with graphic smokey eyes described by McGrath as “smouldering” and “sultry”.

Fox herself, who was at the show by request of Donatella Versace, also wore the eye look she inspired. Calling her a “McGrath Muse”, the make-up artist explained that Fox was invited to, for the first time ever, debut the show’s graphic smokey eye look before the show. Fox paired her now signature grungey smokey eye with a slicked-back latex-wrapped ponytail that reached the floor.

To get the look for yourself, you will need a range of various black eyeshadows and eyeliners. First, McGrath says, take the PermaGel Ultra Glide Eye Pencil in ‘XTREME BLACK’ (or any black eyeliner you have) and define the upper and lower lash lines, as well as the waterline. Then using the same eyeliner create a blocked wing shape through the crease and diffuse the edges. Mix your eyeliner with a balm, for example the one in the Skin Fetish: Highlighter + Balm Duo, and blend across the lid to create a translucent wash of colour.

Using the Mothership I: Subliminal Palette shade ‘XTREME BLACK’ (or any black eyeshadow) blend to the inner and outer corner of the eye, and under the lower lash line to create depth. Lastly, finish up with some mascara and you are good to go. As McGrath says, “it’s going to be a smokey spring!”
