Vaccinated people who haven’t gotten boosted make up growing number of COVID-19 cases - WSB Atlanta

ATLANTA — Fully vaccinated Georgians who have not yet received a booster shot make up a growing number of people with COVID-19.

Omicron is still infecting the unvaccinated at a much higher rate than those who have received their shots, but the state continues to see more and more breakthrough cases.

The Georgia Department of Health said breakthrough infections made up 28% of new cases of COVID-19 in mid-December, compared to just 12% of new cases in August during the delta surge.

People who have had their booster make up just 3% of all breakthrough infections, which is why public health officials have been encouraging people to get their booster doses.

Channel 2′s Matt Johnson talked to Tahmonie Stubbs, who has had two vaccine doses but still tested positive for COVID-19. It came at the worst possible time, on Christmas Eve.

“It’s been hitting people. Like, it seems like everybody kind of got sick at the same time,” Stubbs said.

Stubbs said she had a fever, chills, body aches and a headache. She was forced to cancel her plans and spend a virtual Christmas with her parents.

“It turned out I had COVID,” Stubbs said. “And I was actually gonna go down to see them for Christmas. So that stops all of that.”

Dr. Leslie Leighton, a doctor and professor at Georgia State University, said that the unvaccinated are the most at risk, but fully vaccinated and even boosted people are also at risk for the virus.

“It’s not only a disease of the unvaccinated, but it’s much more severe in the unvaccinated,” Leighton said. “Wearing a mask is important for those who have been vaccinated and even boosted because of the number of breakthrough infections that we’ve seen.”

Stubbs never had to be hospitalized, but she said she is going to do something else to avoid being that sick again.

“I’m going to go ahead and get that booster,” Subbs said. “Doing anything, everything it takes.”
