SVSU will hold make-up commencement for its Class of 2020 this weekend - MLive.com

KOCHVILLE TWP., MI - Amidst its winter 2021 commencements, Saginaw Valley State University will soon welcome its Class of 2020 back to campus for the traditional sendoff they missed out on last year: an in-person, walk-across-the-stage graduation ceremony.

More than 130 2020 graduates have registered for the ceremony thus far, said Nic Taylor, SVSU’s executive director of Alumni Relations.

Though many members of the graduating class have already moved a prohibitive distance away, he said the university wanted to ensure those who wanted to walk for graduation would still have the chance to do so.

“SVSU has always shown the opportunities for our students, supported them through those opportunities, and most importantly celebrated their success,” Taylor said. “There’s still that group of students who want to have their families see them walk across the stage... It’s our way of making sure that the whole class knows that they’re still important to us and we want to celebrate their success.”

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Class of 2020 attended a virtual commencement in May and were expected to be able to walk at a ceremony in December 2020, but the event didn’t materialize, Taylor said.

The university will still practice social distancing and require masks during the ceremony, keeping up with its community standards and ensuring the even is as safe as possible, he said.

“It’s very important to me,” said Marcelina Fulgencio, a 2020 SVSU graduate who now works for the university in undergraduate admissions. “As a student at SVSU, I was heavily involved. Getting to walk across the stage like it was promised to me as an incoming freshman is something that I was always looking forward to.”

Fulgencio’s virtual commencement ceremony didn’t make her feel like she had fully turned the page on that chapter of her life, she said.

Even though she has gotten a master’s degree since and is now working for the university, she said she knew when the ceremony was announced that she had to go.

“The overall arching goal that we wanted was to just walk across the stage, it’s not very much to ask for,” Fulgencio said. “Even though most of us have gone on and done grad school or are in grad school and have careers now, we didn’t have that. It’s very important just to be able to say that we’ve done it.”

The 2020 graduation ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ryder Center within O’Neill Arena on SVSU’s campus. Two ceremonies for 486 winter 2021 graduates will take place there at 12:30 and 4 p.m. Friday, according to a news release.

Each graduate can reserve up to four tickets for family and friends when they register, and the ceremonies will also stream live from SVSU’s website. For more information, visit the site here.

“I think that the anticipation is just very heavily built up,” Fulgencio said. “I think that it will be very emotional for a lot of people who have waited so long... and very, very joyous for a lot of people.”
