The New York Mets (40-33, first place in the National League’s eastern division) will make a one-game stop in the nation’s capital to play manager Dave Martinez‘s Washington Nationals (37-38, second place in the National League’s eastern division) before heading to Atlanta for three games with the Braves.

In their most recent action, the Mets split a four-game series against the Phillies at Citi Field ,while the Nationals split a four-game set of their own against the Marlins in Miami. New York scored a total of nine runs in its four games against the Phillies, as the offensive struggles continue despite getting Michael Conforto and Jeff McNeil back from injuries. The Mets will add Brandon Nimmo to their lineup on Tuesday in Atlanta, with J.D. Davis, Jonathan Villar, and Tomas Nido projected to be not far behind.

The Nationals have been the hottest team in the division, posting a 7-3 record over their last 10 games. Kyle Schwarber has been a big contributor with his surge of home runs since being moved into the lineup’s leadoff spot.

The Mets were in DC June 18-20 for four games and lost three of the four. The weather looks fair and very hot for the game, with temperatures expected to be in the mid 90s with high humidity.

Monday, June 28 Game RHP Jerad Eickhoff (0-0) NYM vs Undecided WSH, 7:05 pm

Eickhoff in 2021: GS: 1, ERA: 0.00, IP: 4.0, H: 3, ER: 0, HR: 0, BB: 3, SO: 3, WHIP: 1.50

Eickhoff was originally set to make the start on June 27 against the Phillies (against Zack Wheeler), however, Marcus Stroman was able to return from his hip injury to make the start.

After not pitching in 2020, Eickhoff signed as a non-roster player with the Mets last off-season and began the year at Syracuse. When the pitching situation became dire because of injuries and a heavy schedule, the Mets gave the Evansville, IN native a shot, and he answered the call admirably. On June 21 against the Braves (game two of a doubleheader), Eickhoff went four innings, allowing no runs on three hits. The next night, he was used as a pinch-hitter and recorded a base hit.

The Nationals’ Erick Fedde would have been set to make this start, but he landed on the injured list on June 27 with an oblique injury.

The game can be seen locally on SNY and heard locally on WCBS radio 880 am.

“Series” Notes

Schwarber leads the Nationals in home runs with 22, followed by Trea Turner (12), and Josh Bell (11). Washington’s OPS leaders are Schwarber (.876), Turner (.838), and Juan Soto (.824).

Pete Alonso leads the Mets in home runs with 11, followed by Francisco Lindor (9), and Kevin Pillar (8). New York’s OPS leaders are Alonso (.796), Lindor (.678), Dominic Smith (.670).

This is an important game for the Mets. Going into Atlanta, a five-game lead sounds a lot better than a three-game lead in the division. After facing the Braves, the Mets will visit the Bronx for three games with the Yankees before closing the first half at Citi Field with three against the Brewers and four against the Pirates.

The Mets are in a stretch of 18 games in 17 days and will have to find the pitching depth and increased offense to persevere and maintain their lead in the division. While no game in June is a “must win”, this is an important statement game for New York, especially after having lost three of four to the Nationals just over a week ago.
