Summary

  • The new Fallout series, based on the popular video games, has the potential to make up for the disappointment of Westworld's later seasons.
  • The co-creators of Westworld, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, are behind the new Fallout series, suggesting it is in capable hands for its television debut.

The new dystopian series Fallout can finally make up for the disappointing final season of HBO's acclaimed series Westword. Based on the celebrated series of post-apocalyptic video games that began in 1997, Fallout is set to release in 2024 on Amazon Prime Video. There have been six full-scale RPGs in the Fallout series with 2015's Fallout 4 often being considered one of the best of the franchise. Based on the critical success of the Fallout video games, the potential for Amazon's Fallout series has a very high ceiling.

When Westworld was first released in 2015, it was widely considered one of the most brilliant futuristic sci-fi series on television before there was a noticeable change in the quality of writing during seasons 3 and 4. The co-creators of Westworld, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, are also behind the new Fallout series, which should indicate that the beloved franchise is in great hands for its major television debut. Prime's Fallout show, which is expected to be released on April 12, 2024, could end up being a thrilling dystopian adventure just like the games, allowing Nolan and Joy to make up for how disappointing Westworld got by season 4.

The Fallout Show Can Avoid What Went Wrong With Westworld

With the Fallout release video revealing an aesthetic approach that is directly inspired by the games, the upcoming Prime series is certainly set to be one of the better television offerings of 2024. Knowing the amazing talents of Nolan and Joy, especially in a joint effort, Fallout season 1 should meet the already high expectations that fans of the video games will have of the show. The issue will be whether Nolan and Joy will be able to navigate through the content of the several video games to flesh out a continuously engaging narrative past the first season alone.

Westworld tapered in quality after an outstanding first season, and Nolan and Joy are likely extremely aware of this fact as they move forward with Fallout. Westworld went wrong by abandoning the formula that worked so well for them in season 1, expanding the once rich backstory of the characters into the realm of the excessive and overdone in season 2, only to completely change the look and tone of the show in season 3 and beyond. The show itself seemed to lose grip of itself and lost the notion of what made it so great in the first place.

The sky is truly the limit for Prime's Fallout series, which has the makings of being one of the best new shows of 2024 based on its hype alone. The series will be an adaptation of the longstanding video game franchise set in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, which already sounds very intriguing. Jonathan Nolan directed the first three episodes himself, which will certainly set the ideal tone and pace for a series that should run multiple successful seasons. A solid cast of familiar faces such as Moises Arias, Walton Goggins, Kyle MacLachlan, Ella Purnell, and Johnny Pemberton also add promise that Fallout can correct the mistakes of Nolan and Joy's faltering Westworld.
