Many Michiganders missed out on having a white Christmas this year, due to record-warm temperatures. But that unseasonable weather brought with it something of a consolation prize: stunning skies.
MLive meteorologist Mark Torregrossa explained the science behind all the lovely sunrises and sunsets we've been seeing around the state in the past few days:
"December is a very cloudy time of year because of the cold air coming across the Great Lakes," he said. "But when you have record warmth, that means it kills the cloud process. That means we get sunshine and clearing skies."
"That record warmth helped us see beautiful sunsets and sunrises, when normally this time of year it's 95 percent cloudy," he said.
Torregrossa also said that the low angle of the sun is another factor, creating a "different look" to sunrises and sunsets this time of year.
This week MLive asked its Facebook followers to submit their most stellar sunrise and sunset photos from this Christmas and the day after; read on to see a few favorites. For more on Michigan weather, including photos and live daily weather reports, join MLive's Michigan Weather Facebook group.
