Grand Island Tree Board hosts make-up Arbor Day event - KSNB

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Grand Island Tree Board didn’t get to celebrate Arbor Day in April due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but continued to educate the public with a make-up event Tuesday.

Members showed how to properly plant a tree using the newest techniques at the Grand Island Arboretum, which is located in Suck’s Lake and Park. They walked people through how deep to dig the hole, how to pull the tree out of the container, fluff the roots properly, water and mulch the tree. When finished, demonstrators stabilized the tree with two poles to prevent it from falling over.

Barry Burrows, president of the Grand Island Tree Board, said their job is to advocate for trees and keep the public informed.

“We try everything to keep expanding our learning: How trees should work, how trees should grow and how to plant trees. We feel we should pass that on to the community, because we want them to be just as successful at planting trees as we are.”

The tree planted Tuesday is a Miyabe Maple donated by Steve Myer with Elite Dreamscapes. It’s the first of its kind at the Grand Island Arboretum. The tree will eventually grow to be about 45 feet tall and 35 feet wide.

The Miyabe Maple will be one of 37 different varieties of trees at the Arboretum. Burrows said the area has space for 60 to 70 more trees.

Family and friends of Greg Bosselman, who worked with city parks for more than 30 years, collected money to put a stone sign on the northwest end of the Arboretum. It’ll read 'Grand Island Arboretum’ on the front and have some history on Bosselman on the back. The sign will be installed sometime in the next few weeks.
